The SCOOTER Store Donates Power Wheelchair to Brooklyn Teenager with Cerebral Palsy

Brooklyn, NY - A city block can feel endless to Sandra Patricia Martinez Palacios, 16, as she uses a set of crutches to navigate between her home and the church that she loves to attend. But thanks to the gift of a power wheelchair from The SCOOTER Store (www.thescooterstore.com), traveling that distance is now much easier for the teenager with Cerebral palsy.

Today, George Santos, Mobility Manager of The SCOOTER Store's Levittown, New York Distribution Center, and Anthony Pepe, the Distribution Center Manager, delivered a power wheelchair (http://www.thescooterstore.com/products/powerchairs.aspx) to Sandra at the Second Evangelistic Crusade Church with her family and Rev. Calete Cortes by her side. The family, which doesn't speak much English, called the power wheelchair a "big blessing" and they are "still in shock by the generosity of The SCOOTER Store," according to Rev. Cortes, who originally wrote to The SCOOTER Store about Sandra.

Rev. Cortes was moved by the Palacios family and especially young Sandra who was born with Cerebral palsy. The family immigrated to the US from Ecuador a few years ago and the difficult transition has been made easier by their involvement in the church where, he says, the family has found "joy and peace." The family says that "the smile on Sandra's face when she is at church is the best therapy" for her.

The members of the small church take delight in her smile, too, but they could not afford to buy a power wheelchair for Sandra, who has neither the insurance nor the money to buy one. But they were determined to help. They were able to get handrails and a ramp donated, and then they turned to The SCOOTER Store for assistance.

The SCOOTER Store quickly qualified Sandra under its "Gift of Mobility" program. Through the program, mobility equipment and assistance is donated to individuals living with disabilities who do not have the resources or insurance coverage to pay for power wheelchairs or scooters that can improve their quality of life.

Doug Harrison, CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store, says that "once we learned about Sandra, we wanted to help make it easier for her to get to church and anywhere else she wants to go. We are so glad this gift will allow her to be more mobile and independent."

Mr. Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002 to help people like Sandra improve their quality of life by recovering their independence and mobility. Since then, the outreach program has worked with community organizations to donate power wheelchairs, scooters and manual wheelchairs valued at more than $200,000 a year. The gifts provide freedom and independence to individuals with limited mobility.
