Former Actor Has Mobility Restored with Power Wheelchair Gift from The SCOOTER Store

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 30, 2008 -- Ronald Johnston, 70, has spent his life in the public eye - whether he was performing on Broadway, acting and dancing in troupes across the country, or appearing in television commercials. But two years ago, cancer robbed him of his mobility, forcing him to be housebound for the past year. To fulfill his dream to get outside again, The SCOOTER Store (www.thescooterstore.com) has donated a power wheelchair (http://www.thescooterstore.com/products/powerchairs.aspx) to him.

Today, Anthony Pepe, Manager of the Levittown, NY Distribution Center, and George Santos, Mobility Manager, delivered the power wheelchair to Mr. Johnston, and his wife, Cynthia. A health aide put the Johnstons in touch with the Dream Foundation and The SCOOTER Store, which qualified Mr. Johnson for its ?Gift of Mobility? program. The charitable program provides power mobility equipment to people without the resources or insurance coverage to pay for it.

Mr. Johnston was ?shocked and thrilled? by how quickly he was able to get a power wheelchair. After a 40-year acting career, highlighted by roles with Madeline Khan, Ed Asner, and Sir Ian McKellen, Mr. Johnston was diagnosed with prostrate cancer. He suffers from debilitating pain that prevents him from standing. Leaving his apartment has not been an option because his manual chair was ?just too heavy? for his wife to push.

Doug Harrison, CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store related that ?Mr. Johnston simply wanted to enjoy what so many of us take for granted everyday. We are happy that this gift will allow him to improve his mobility and his quality of life.?

Mr. Johnston declared he can?t wait to ?get out!? of his apartment. He lives just minutes from Riverside and Central Parks and is anxious to accompany his wife on daily trips through the parks and on shopping trips. But most of all, he dreams of using the chair to take his wife to operas, plays and dance performances.

Mr. Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002 to help people like Mr. Johnson improve their quality of life by recovering their independence and mobility. Since then, the outreach program has worked with community service organizations around the world to donate power wheelchairs, scooters and manual wheelchairs valued at more than $200,000 a year. The mobility equipment helps restore freedom and independence to people living with disabilities.

The Dream Foundation, (www.dreamfoundation.org) is the first and largest organization that grants final wishes to adults who have been physically, emotionally, and financially devastated by terminal illness. Now in its 13th year, the Dream Foundation?s mission is to enhance the quality of life for individuals and families battling terminal illnesses. Their goal is to ensure that no terminally ill adult whose life ends prematurely passes from this earth without realizing one final wish from the heart.
