The Scooter Store Donates Power Wheelchair to Paraplegic, a Victim of Accidental Shooting

Shalersville, OH (PRWEB) October 24, 2007 -- Nobody knows better than Nathan Gay that life can change in a moment. His own changed dramatically when a friend accidentally shot him in the neck, paralyzing the 24-year-old from the waist down. Now, with help from The SCOOTER Store (http://www.thescooterstore.com), his life is changing again--for the better, this time--with its gift of a power wheelchair. He will have the mobility and independence needed to attend college.

Last night, in a surprise ceremony at the Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Shalersville, Mr. Gay received a power wheelchair (http://www.thescooterstore.com/products/powerchairs.aspx) from Matthew Phillips, the Manager of The SCOOTER Store in Pittsburgh, PA. The SCOOTER Store worked with Andrew Fortuna of the Crestwood Action Coalition Team (CATC) (http://www.crestwoodcact.com/index.html), based in nearby Mantua, Ohio to provide the wheelchair.

CACT is a small non-profit organization whose members are dedicated to "serve the community first." Once CACT learned about Mr. Gay, they decided to help.

Mr. Gay lives with his widowed mother. Finances are very tight, and he lacks insurance coverage for a power wheelchair. Since graduating from high school, he has been determined to enroll in college. But without a power wheelchair to navigate around a campus, his goal of college seemed out of reach. That changed when CACT contacted The SCOOTER Store about ten days ago.

Mr. Fortuna called The SCOOTER Store after researching power wheelchairs. As he tells it, "nine out of nine" people he consulted had urged him to "call The SCOOTER Store." When he did and explained CACT's goal of raising funds to buy a power wheelchair for Mr. Gay, Mr. Fortuna says he was "blown away" to learn The SCOOTER Store would provide one through its "Gift of Mobility (http://www.giftofmobility.com/)" program. The generous donation allowed CACT to instead raise funds to offset Nathan's college expenses at Kent State University (http://www.kent.edu/), where he plans to start classes in January.

Thanks to The SCOOTER Store and CACT Nathan will finally reach his goal of going to college.

Doug Harrison (http://www.thescooterstore.com/aboutus/bios/dougharrison.aspx), CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store, says he was determined to help after learning of Nathan's story. "With this gift, two goals are met," Mr. Harrison notes. "Nathan will meet his goal of attending college, and we are reaching the goal of the Gift of Mobility program by helping people who may be less fortunate improve their quality of life through mobility."

Mr. Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002 to help people like Nathan improve their quality of life by recovering their independence and mobility. Since then, the outreach program has worked with organizations around the world to donate power wheelchairs, scooters and manual wheelchairs valued at more than $200,000 a year to community service organizations, enabling them to provide freedom and independence to individuals with limited mobility.
