The Scooter Store Donates Power Wheelchair to Determined Amputee Who Refuses to Give Up

Grundy, VA (PRWEB) October 11, 2007 -- Sherry Jackson is a survivor. Ms. Jackson fought the odds and overcame an allergic reaction that doctors said would kill her. She has kept a positive attitude even after both of her legs had to be amputated. Now she is fighting again; she wants to regain her mobility and independence. To help Ms. Jackson achieve her goal, The SCOOTER Store (http://www.thescooterstore.com/) has donated the 46-year-old woman an Invacare M51 power wheelchair.

Today, The SCOOTER Store provided the power wheelchair (http://www.thescooterstore.com/products/powerchairs.aspx) as part of its "Gift of Mobility" program, which donates power mobility equipment and assistance to individuals who do not have the resources or insurance coverage to pay for them. Kenny Edwards, a Mobility Manager at The SCOOTER Store's Dunbar location in West Virginia, teamed with the community service organization, ADL Foundation/Mobility Aids for the Uninsured (http://www.adlfoundation.org/), to make the donation.

Ms. Jackson lives with her son and boyfriend, both of whom have supported her financially and physically since she lost her legs. Ms. Jackson tries to help with household chores, but because she cannot reach the stove-top or sink, she is limited to folding laundry. Ms. Jackson also tries to maneuver around their home in her manual wheelchair, but it is too wide to fit through the doorways, so she needs to be carried from room to room. Even though her state of dependency can be frustrating, she vows she "won't give up."

Her persistence and positive attitude paid off when Ms. Jackson called The SCOOTER Store after seeing a television advertisement (http://www.thescooterstore.com/aboutus/commercials.aspx). Without insurance or income, Ms. Jackson hoped for the best and was surprised when she learned that the company would be donating a power wheelchair. Since receiving the news, Ms. Jackson says she has "cried and cried tears of joy" and is excited about the prospect of being able to go shopping for her family and helping with housework. "I can't wait to be less dependent," she says.

After hearing about Ms. Jackson's fighting spirit, Doug Harrison, CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store, was pleased to learn the new power wheelchair would mean so much to her. "We are pleased that Ms. Jackson is regaining some mobility and independence with this power wheelchair," he said. "We started the Gift of Mobility program to help people improve their quality of life, and we are pleased that Ms. Jackson will have the ability to do more things and enjoy more out of life."

Mr. Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002 to help people like Ms. Jackson improve their quality of life by recovering their independence and mobility. Since then, the outreach program has worked with organizations around the world to donate power wheelchairs, scooters and manual wheelchairs valued at more than $200,000 a year to community service organizations, enabling them to provide freedom and independence to individuals with limited mobility.
