Lake Elsinore Family Caregiver Receives Free Power Wheelchair from the Scooter Store

Lake Elsinore, CA (PRWEB) August 31, 2007 -- Sandra Gares has spent her life caring for other members of her family, but now she is the one needing help. Poor health has caught up with Ms. Gares, who at 62, has become disabled by severe arthritis in her knees. To help her become mobile again, The SCOOTER Store is donating a Pride Jazzy Select 14XL (http://www.pridemobility.com/Products/Jazzy/JazzySelect14XL/jazzyselect14xl.html) power wheelchair to her.

Today, Ms. Gares received the power wheelchair from The SCOOTER Store as part of its ?Gift of Mobility? program, which provides mobility equipment and assistance to individuals who do not have the resources or insurance coverage to purchase power wheelchairs and scooters. Eddie Cardenas, Mobility Manager of The SCOOTER Store?s Los Angeles location, worked with the National Chronic Pain Society (http://ncps-cpr.net/about.php) of Houston, Texas to make the gift available to Ms. Gares.

After seeing a television ad (http://www.thescooterstore.com/aboutus/commercials.aspx) and visiting The SCOOTER Store?s website, her daughter, Carol Payne, wrote to the company seeking help. Ms. Payne explained her mother?s poor health and limited financial resources.

Ms. Payne and her mother were surprised to learn that The SCOOTER Store would donate a power wheelchair to Ms. Gares. Initially left ?speechless? by the company?s unexpected generosity, they now happily report how ?blessed? the family feels that Ms. Gares can make plans for being mobile and active again.

The immobility caused by the arthritis has been tough on Ms. Gares. Over the years, she had been on the go taking care of other family members?her five children, husband and sickly father. Since becoming immobile, Ms. Gares has often been home alone, suffering from cabin fever and missing her recently deceased husband of 45 years. Ms. Gares badly wants to get outside, enjoy the fresh air and meet her grandchildren on their way home from school. She says she is so ?thrilled? to be able to have those experiences, thanks to the new power wheelchair.

Doug Harrison (http://www.thescooterstore.com/aboutus/bios/dougharrison.aspx), CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store, says he too is ?pleased that the power wheelchair will restore Ms. Gares?s mobility and allow her more freedom. She has devoted so much to caring for others, we are happy to do this for her.?

Mr. Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002 to help people like Ms. Gares improve their quality of life by regaining their independence and mobility. Since then, the outreach program has worked with organizations around the world to donate power wheelchairs (http://www.thescooterstore.com/products/powerchairs.aspx), scooters and manual wheelchairs, valued at more than $200,000 a year, to community service organizations, enabling them to provide freedom and independence to individuals with limited mobility.
