Power Wheelchair Gives Disabled High School Student Hope and Independence

NASSAU, Bahamas (PRWEB) May 11, 2007 -- Born with crippling spina bifida, young Dinero LaFanier has depended on his family, friends and church members to help him with even the simplest tasks. Dinero is about to graduate high school and has been accepted into college to study computers, but feared he would not be able to attend because of his immobility. The SCOOTER Store is giving him the best graduation gift possible - a power wheelchair that gives him independence and hope for the future.

Through The SCOOTER Store's Gift of Mobility program a Jazzy Select power wheelchair was delivered to Dinero today. Representatives of The SCOOTER Store worked with the Bishop Bill Johnson, pastor of the Church of God International in Oxford, Ala., to provide the power wheelchair to Dinero. Camille Marino, Manager of the SCOOTER Store in Orlando, Fla., and Brian Ozen, the Distribution Center manager, presented the wheelchair to Johnson, and he is sending it to Dinero.

Dinero, 20, suffers from spina bifida that has caused paralysis to the lower half of his body. He depends solely on his family and friends to push him in his manual wheelchair to school, church or wherever he needs to go. Recently, however, his outlook brightened when Johnson met Dinero when visiting his church in the Bahamas. Johnson could not forget the remarkable young man. Despite being bound to a manual wheelchair, he would struggle for any bit of independence he could achieve. Johnson was awed to see Dinero refuse any assistance and literally throw his fragile body in and out of the family's car.

Sadly, Dinero's independent streak was not strong enough to allow him to be mobile on his own. But when Dinero receives the power wheelchair from The SCOOTER Store, he will gain the freedom and independence he could only dream about. With the power wheelchair, Dinero will be able to get himself to and from college and, after college, to work at a job that is waiting for him.

"My wife had seen The SCOOTER Store's commercials on television," said Johnson, "so we decided to call them and see if they could help out young Dinero. I was so happy to learn that our prayers, and the prayers of so many who know Dinero, were being answered by the good people at The SCOOTER Store."

Doug Harrison, CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store, said he was touched by Bishop Johnson's stories about Dinero. "It was amazing how this young person faced adversity with such strength and courage," Mr. Harrison said. "We are proud to be able to help Dinero regain mobility that will make him more independent."

Mr. Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002 to help provide freedom, independence and personal integrity to people with limited mobility. Since its inception, the outreach program has worked with organizations around the world to donate each year as many as 70 power wheelchairs and scooters and manual wheelchairs valued at more than $200,000.
