Power Wheelchair Restores Mobility, Freedom and Independence to Family Matriarch
HARLINGEN, TX (PRWeb) March 22, 2007 -- For years, Estela Melendez ran her small ranch, and was the matriarch of her extended family, many of whom had emigrated from Mexico and became US citizens. But that changed eight years ago, when she suddenly suffered a stroke that left her disabled, and unable to walk on her own.
Her family does as much as they can. They stop by to fix meals and take her outside, but the 68 year-old woman has been depressed lately, as her mobility has become more and more limited. But with the help of The SCOOTER Store, today Mrs. Melendez has more mobility, freedom and independence.
Under their generous Gift of Mobility program, The SCOOTER Store has donated a power wheelchair to Mrs. Melendez. The power wheelchair will allow Mrs. Melendez to get to her kitchen to prepare meals, roll outside to get fresh air and to perform other necessary daily activities. The power wheelchair was delivered by Juan Castro, who is a Mobility Manager at The SCOOTER Store location in New Braunfels, Texas. The SCOOTER Store worked with Isidro E. Pina, a Pastor at the La Trinidad United Methodist Church in Seguin, TX to make this Gift of Mobility to Mrs. Melendez.
"We are very pleased that this Gift of Mobility can help Mrs. Melendez improve her quality of life," said Doug Harrison, the founder and CEO of The SCOOTER Store. "Our Gift of Mobility program was created to help people who badly need mobility assistance, but do not have the resources or insurance coverage to obtain it. We are proud that people like Mrs. Melendez can improve their mobility and quality of life because of this program."
Mr. Harrison, and the company's co-founder, his wife, Susanna, created the Gift of Mobility Program in December 2002. Since its inception, the outreach program has worked with community service organizations to donate more than $200,000 per year in wheelchairs and scooters to people living with disabilities who do not have the resources or insurance coverage to obtain mobility equipment.
