Power Wheelchair Donated to Portland Woman Denied by Insurance Provider

Portland, OR (PRWeb) January 31, 2007 -- Loretta Mae Deane refuses to give up -- no matter what. She can't be stopped by multiple debilitating illnesses, limited mobility or repeated insurance denials. Today, with the help of The SCOOTER Store, Loretta received just what she needed to keep going.

Ms. Deane was awarded a power wheelchair from The SCOOTER Store as part of its "Gift of Mobility Program," which provides mobility equipment and assistance to those who do not have the means to purchase power wheelchairs and scooters. Tiana Julian, Manager of The SCOOTER Store's retail store in Clackamas, OR, worked with Pastor Jewell Collins and the New Hope Community Church to make the gift to Ms. Deane.

Ms. Deane, 72, a longtime Portland resident, has suffered from numerous health challenges since 1992 when she was diagnosed with Scleroderma and given three to five years to live. Scleroderma, a chronic connective tissue disease, causes hardening of the skin and is extremely painful and de-mobilizing.

Two years later, she learned that her health was further declining when she was diagnosed with idiopathic peripheral neuropathy. Ms. Deane's legs had to be broken to be placed in foot, ankle and knee braces for treatment of the condition.

Attempting to remain involved in her church and community activities, despite her deteriorating health, Ms. Deane applied for a power mobility device through her insurance provider. The insurer denied her claim twice and instead provided her with a manual wheelchair. Without the strength, endurance or hand-grip capability to navigate the wheelchair, Ms. Deane was back to square one.

"It touched our hearts to learn of Ms. Deane's courage. We couldn't believe that one person could experience so much pain and continue to look for ways to be mobile and serve their community. That speaks volumes about her character," said Doug Harrison, The SCOOTER Store's CEO and Founder. "We are proud to award this power wheelchair to Ms. Deane. She is a tremendous example of the strength of the human spirit and we are honored to help her remain as active as possible."

The SCOOTER Store, the nation's leading provider of power wheelchairs and scooters, created its Gift of Mobility program in December 2002. Since its inception, the outreach program has worked with organizations all over the world to donate more than $200,000 per year in power wheelchairs and scooters, and manual wheelchairs to community service organizations enabling them to provide freedom, independence and personal integrity to those with limited mobility.
"We created the Gift of Mobility program to give back to people like Ms. Deane who need help and are making outstanding contributions to their communities," said Mr. Harrison, who founded the company with his wife, Susanna, in 1991.
